GOD the SON
His Mission
The Plan for Christ’s Mission
▰ God planned before the foundation of the world that Christ would atone for man’s sins.
▻ 1 Peter 1:19-20
▰ God planned from the foundation of the world that Christ would be killed for mankind to rescue them from hell.
▻ Revelation 13:8
▰ God planned from the foundation of the world that all who believe on Christ would inherit His kingdom.
▻ Matthew 25:34
The Progress of Christ’s Mission
▰ Christ’s earthly life
▻ He was born in Bethlehem about 5 BC to be man’s Saviour (Luke 2:11), and to suffer death for mankind (Hebrews 2:9).
▻ Joseph and Mary took Him to Egypt to escape death (Matthew 2:13-15), then moved to Nazareth in Galilee where he grew up.
▻ His stepfather Joseph was a carpenter and he had several half brothers and sisters (Mark 6:3).
▻ He began preaching and doing miracles when He was about 30 years old (Luke 3:23). This mission lasted about 3 years.
The Fulfilment of Christ’s Mission
▰ Christ’s atoning death
▻ Jesus was nailed to a Roman cross (John 20:25).
▻ On the cross Christ bore the sins of all mankind (1Peter 2:24).
▻ Christ shed His blood for our sins (Revelation 1:5).
▻ He gave himself a ransom for all (1Timothy 2:6). Calvinism is wrong!
▻ He was the propitiation for the sins of the whole world (1John 2:2).
▻ By his death, Jesus destroyed the power of Satan (Hebrews 2:14).
▻ This was God’s eternal redemption plan (Acts 2:23).
The Fulfilment of Christ’s Mission
▰ Christ’s physical resurrection
▻ While dead, Jesus’ body was in the tomb and His spirit went to Hades, the place of the departed dead (Acts 2:27).
▻ Christ was buried and rose from the dead after three days (1Corinthians 15:3-4).
▻ Christ rose bodily from the dead (Luke 24:39-43).
▻ Many people saw the resurrected Christ (1Corinthians 15:5-7).
▻ He rose again to justify repentant sinners (Romans 4:25) and to give us eternal life (1Corinthians 15:20-23).
The Fulfilment of Christ’s Mission
▰ During that time in hell, He preach to the spirits in prison (1 Peter 3:19).
▻ He did not give dead people a second chance to repent, for judgment follows death (Hebrews 9:27).
▻ There are many theories, but I think the best is that Christ as the victorious Messiah announced His victory to the chained fallen angels (Jude 1:6).
The Fulfilment of Christ’s Mission
▰ Christ’s heavenly ascension
▻ Just before He departed, He gave the Great Commission to His followers (Matthew 28:18-20).
▻ After 40 days with His followers, Jesus returned to heaven (Acts 1:3, 9). He was received up into glory (1 Timothy 3:16).
▻ Because He ascended, He was able to send the Holy Spirit to indwell believers (John 16:7-13).
