The Revelation
Study of John’s Revelation
Chapter 6
Chapter 6 – Opening the Seals
The Opening of the Seals Begins (Re 6:1)
The Lamb (Christ) began the process.
Remember, He is the only one worthy to open the seals.
He is in the throne room of heaven.
When the seal broke, two sounds were heard
A loud rumble like thunder sounded.
One of the four living creatures says, “Come and see.”
This begins the 70th week of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27)
Soon after the Rapture, the Man of Sin will be revealed (2Th 2:3-9).
This antichrist will make a “peace contract” with Israel (Dan 9:27).
The Trib judgments are against those who have rejected Christ.
Chapter 6 – Opening the Seals
All of the Tribulation judgements are contained in the sealed scroll.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal One
The First Seal Reveals a White Horse and Rider (Re 6:2)
The white horse symbolises victory
The rider is a counterfeit Christ – the Antichrist (the Man of Sin). He is the world dictator described in Daniel 9:26-27 who will appear
as a peaceful leader.
His bow with no arrows may represent a bloodless victory.
A victor’s crown will be given him.
He will go out conquering and to conquer.
He will deceive the world.
He wants to become the final victor of the world. He will make a covenant with Israel, but in deceit (Mt 24:4-5).
I believe that the rapture will spark world panic and the Antichrist will deceitfully calm the world and take control.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal Two
The Second Seal Reveals a Red Horse and Rider (Re 6:3-4)
The red horse symbolises the shedding of blood.
The Antichrist will break his peace contract.
Perhaps this will mark the half-way point in the Tribulation.
The rider was carrying a great sword.
The peace promised by the Antichrist will end.
The Antichrist will reveal his true character in the middle of the Tribulation.
This second seal greatly resembles the predicted wars in Matthew 24:6.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal Three
The Third Seal Reveals a Black Horse and Rider (Re 6:5-6)
The rider is carrying balances.
Balances were used in the markets for weighing food for sale.
Food will be rationed because of a great famine.
A voice announces the shortness of food.
In addition to rationing of food, prices will inflate dramatically.
A scoop of wheat and three scoops of barley will sell for a penny, which represents a day’s wages.
This judgment will not hurt the wealthy.
The phrase “the oil and the wine” may describe the rich.
In time of famine, both oil and wine will be luxury items that only the rich can afford.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal Four
The Fourth Seal Reveals a Pale Horse and Rider (Re 6:7-8)
The rider is death followed by hell.
This judgment will cause widespread death.
Hell follows along to receive those who are taken by death.
One-fourth of the world’s population will die.
Death will kill using means: the sword, hunger, death (maybe by sickness, cold or fallout), and beasts.
This will be a terrible judgment.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal Five
The Fifth Seal Reveals Cries from Heaven (Re 6:9-11)
The scene shifts from earth to heaven (v.9).
Souls of martyrs were under the altar, evidently in the temple of heaven.
They were killed during the Tribulation because they preached the Word of God and testified for God.
The Martyrs cry for God’s full judgment (v.10-11).
They asked God how long before he would avenge their blood.
God gave each of the a white robe (v.11), and told them that they must rest yet for a little season (i.e., wait a bit longer).
Other fellowservants and brethren must die before God could avenge their blood.
Chapter 6 – Opening Seal Six
The Sixth Seal Pours out Great Wrath (Re 6:12-17)
A great earthquake will violently shake the earth.
The quake will rock the entire earth.*
The sun, moon, and stars change in appearance (v.12-13).
Meteorites fall to the earth.
The sky will depart like the rolling up of a scroll. Possibly pollution from the disasters will block the sky from sight.
Every mountain and island will be moved (v.14).
Men will greatly fear God’s wrath.
Men of every status will fear (v.15-16).
They will try to hide themselves in dens (caves) and in the rocks.
They will not be able to escape the wrath of God.
Practical Application
The events of the six seals are really going to happen.
The antichrist will rule the world.
His peaceful promises will end in bloodshed.
Famine will torment unbelievers.
Death and hell will overcome 1/4 of the world’s population.
Martyrs will cry for vengeance.
God will shake the earth like never before.
If you are a true Christian, you need not fear. Instead use these facts to warn unsaved family and
friends.
If you are not a true Christian, trust Christ today.
