The Days of Creation
2 February 2014 AM – Genesis 1:1-31 – Gen 14 – Scott Childs
Introduction: How many of you were taught that all dinosaurs died about 65 million years ago? How many of you believe that is true? How many of you are not sure?
Many Christians are confused about creation because the secular media is constantly telling us that evolution is fact and that biblical creation is a myth or story like Peter Rabbit. What we need is to know what God said and believe His facts.
Transition: This morning as we study each day of creation, we will discover several amazing facts that God wants to use to increase our faith.
I. Day 1: Heaven, Earth, and Light (Ge 1:1-5)
A. God created
1. God said (3). God created with His spoken word.
Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
2. The Spirit of God moved (2). God the Holy Spirit was active in creation.
3. God said let there be light (3). God is light and I believe that God was the light of His creation until He made the sun, moon, and stars on day four. In eternity future, God again will be the light of the eternal world.
Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
B. The day ended
1. God saw that it was good (4). Seven times during the creation week, God said that what He did was good.
2. The evening and the morning were the 1st day. This was repeated at the end of each day.
II. Day 2: Atmosphere and Vapour Canopy (Ge 1:6-8)
A. The firmament
1. God said (6). Again, God simply spoke and His wishes were fulfilled.
2. The firmament is the atmosphere.
B. God divided the waters
1. The firmament divided the waters of the sea from the waters above the firmament (7).
2. We believe the waters above the firmament was a vapour canopy, which acted like the roof of a greenhouse making the entire globe warm and tropical. This explains the tropical vegetation that has been found buried on the north and south poles.
III. Day 3: Dry Land and Plants (Ge 1:9-13)
A. Dry land
1. God said. By his spoken word, God caused dry land to rise out of the oceans. Perhaps this is when God buried masses of water under the earth’s crust, which gushed out during the Noahic flood.
2. God saw that it was good. God made nothing by trial and error. He is all-knowing and all-wise.
B. Plant life (11)
1. Again by God’s spoken word, He created grass, herbs, and fruit trees
2. Seeds: God created reproductive live in the seeds of plant life.
3. Kind (11-12). God created kinds of plants. God created each kind with a vast number of variations in its genes, but made them incapable of crossing with other kinds.
IV. Day 4: Sun, Moon and Stars (Ge 1:14-19)
A. Lights
1. By is spoken word God created all the lights in the sky (14).
2. Signs and seasons: God created the orbits of the planets and stars so man could use them for signs or signals to guide navigation. He also made the orbits so they formed seasons.
B. Specific lights
1. Sun and moon are the two great lights. God designed them to regulate day and night.
2. He made the stars also. This sounds almost like a side event, but what an event it was.
According to an Answers in Genesis article, man can see with his eye about 6000 stars but only 3000 at a time. Telescopes reveal that in our Milky Way galaxy there are approximately 200,000 million stars. There are several hundred thousand million galaxies. Scientists guess that the total number of stars might be about 1025 (1 with 25 zeros).
Psalm 147:4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
V. Day 5: Birds and Fish (Ge 1:20-23)
A. Fish
1. God said (20)
2. “Bring forth” does not just mean to reproduce but also to swarm, and to be in great masses.
3. The word translated great whales is usually translated dragon, sea-monster, or serpent. This may refer to swimming dinosaurs.
B. Birds
1. To fly in the firmament
2. Fish and birds reproduced in masses after their kinds (21). God created kinds of fish and kinds of birds. God created each kind with a vast number of variations in its genes, but made them incapable of crossing with other kinds. This fact of life makes evolution impossible.
VI. Day 6: Animals, Creeping things, and Man (Ge 1:24-31)
A. Creatures (24-25)
1. God said (24). Again, God created with His spoken word. When God made all the beasts of the earth and creeping things, it included the dinosaurs as well.
Is there any evidence that dinosaurs lived with man? Yes! There are dragon legends all over the world that fit the description of some dinosaurs. There are also worldwide cave paintings of creatures that look like dinosaurs. Some dinosaur bones still have red blood cells in them. They cannot possibly be millions of years old. The description of the creature Job saw in the Bible sounds like a sauropod dinosaur.
Job 40:15-24 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. …
2. Kind (24). Remember, that God created many kinds of creatures with a wide variety of genetic possibilities, but not one of them can breed with another kind. God locked the kinds.
3. All creatures lived on a vegetarian diet (30). God did not create the animals to be meat-eaters. At creation, the animals were all friendly with each other and with man.
4. It was good (25). God makes no mistakes.
B. Man (26-31)
1. Created in God’s image and likeness. These two terms appear to be synonyms. They may refer to man’s personality, intelligence, and spiritual ability to know and relate to God. Constable adds, Both indicate personality, moral, and spiritual qualities that God and man share (i.e., self-consciousness, God-consciousness, freedom, responsibility, speech, moral discernment, etc.).
2. God gave man dominion over everything.
3. Told to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. The word “replenish” did not mean to fill again, but simply to fill. The earth had never been filled before.
4. God gave man a vegetarian diet (29).
5. All that God did was very good (31).
Conclusion: The details of creation are wonderful examples of God’s genius and greatness. In the distance stars viewed through gigantic telescopes, in the tiniest details seen in powerful microscopes, in the colour and beauty in nature, in the many kinds of creatures, in the majestic mountains and vast oceans, and in the miraculous reproduction of life, we see the finger of God, the Designer and Creator. We have an awesome God!
One day you will give account to your Creator for the way you have lived your life. If you have not yet received His forgiveness and gift of eternal life provided by Christ’s death and resurrection, receive it today.
