God the Holy Spirit
His Person
How do we know the Holy Spirit is a Person?
▰ What makes a person a person rather than an object?
▻ Is it not what he is and what he does? Like what?
▻ The same is true of the Holy Spirit.
▰ Though the Holy Spirit has no body, here are some PERSON things he does.
▻ He teaches, Joh 14:26; testifies, Joh 15:26; guides, Rom 8:14; speaks, 1Co 2:13; enlightens, Joh 16:13; strives, Gen 6:3; commands, Act 8:29; intercedes, Rom
8:26; sends workers, Act 13:4; calls, Rev 22:17; comforts, Joh 16:7; works, 1Co 12:11; searches, 1Co 2:10; does miracles, Act 8:39; communes, 2Co 13:14
The Holy Spirit has feelings like a Person
▰ Additional proof that the Holy Spirit is a person is that He may be lied to (Act 5:3), resisted (Acts 7:51), vexed (Isa 63:10), done despite to
[disrespected] (Heb 10:29) and grieved (Eph 4:30).
▻ (Ephesians 4:30) “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
▰ In the context of Ephesians 4:30 (v.25-32), what would be some of the sins that would grieve him?
Something to Ponder!
▰ J. Dwight Pentecost, in his excellent book The Divine Comforter, said this of the Holy Spirit, “As a Person He wants to be known and wants to cause
you to know Him. He wants to love and He wants to be loved. He has a will and He wants His will to be followed and obeyed.” Pentecost, J. Dwight, The Divine
Comforter, The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, Grand Rapids: Kregel Publications, 1998, p. 20
The Holy Spirit is God
▰ In our study of the Trinity, we learned that, as God, the Spirit is eternal (Heb 9:14), omniscient (1Co 2:10), omnipresent (Psa 139:7), omnipotent
(Luk 1:35) and involved in Creation (Gen 1:2).
▰ Here are some other proofs that the Holy Spirit is God.
▻ He gives new life to repentant believing sinners (Tit 3:5). His name is also used in equality with the Father and the Son (Mat 28:19), interchangeably with God
(Act 5:3-4) and can be blasphemed as God (Mat 12:31).
▻ He is identified with Jehovah (Jer 31:31-34 ~ Heb 10:15-17) and (Exo 16:7~ Heb 3:7-9).
The Holy Spirit is the Bible’s Divine Author
▰ He gave divine revelation to His prophets.
▻ “The Holy Spirit is the agent in divine revelation and that which is incomprehensible and undiscoverable to the natural mind has been revealed to us by Him.”
Pentecost, p.21
▻ 1 Corinthians 2:9; Acts 1:16; John 16:13
The Holy Spirit is the Bible’s Divine Author
▰ He inspired the writing of Scripture.
▻ The Holy Spirit gave and guided the writing of the Bible.
▻ (2 Peter 1:20-21) “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
▻ The Holy Spirit moved those men along as the wind bears along a sailboat.
The Holy Spirit is the Bible’s Divine Author
▰ He brings things to remembrance that Christ said.
▻ (John 14:26) “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your
remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
▰ He explains what He wrote to Christians who study the Bible
▻ (1 Corinthians 2:12) “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us
of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with
spiritual.”
