Salvation Intro
What do we mean when we talk about salvation?
Salvation Defined
▰ The word “salvation” means deliverance. “The word ‘salvation’ represents the whole work of God by which He rescues man from the eternal ruin
and doom of sin and bestows on him the riches of His grace, including eternal life now and eternal glory in heaven.” Walvoord, John and Lewis Chafer, Major Bible Themes, Grand
Rapids: Zondervan, p. 181.
▰ When applied to man’s soul, salvation refers to deliverance from sin’s punishment in the lake of fire. Because sin is universal, inescapable,
damning, and humanly incurable, we need God’s salvation.
The Gospel of Salvation
▰ The Gospel is the good news that God has made a way of salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ for any
person. This is in keeping with God’s desire for every person to be saved.Hankins, Dr. Eric, “A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation”
▻ (2 Peter 3:9) “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish,
but that all should come to repentance.”
False Hopes of Salvation
▰ Many people base their hope of heaven on their own opinions rather than on the Word of God. (Proverbs 14:12) “There is a way which seemeth
right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Here are some common false hopes of religious people.
▰ I follow the Ten Commandments.
▻ (James 2:10) “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
Salvation
▰ I am religious (church, pray, give, sing).
▻ (Matthew 7:22-23) “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name
done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
▰ I am a good person.
▻ (Ephesians 2:8-9) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Salvation
▰ I have been baptised.
▻ (1 Corinthians 1:17) “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none
effect.”
▰ I’ve been confirmed.
▻ (Titus 3:5) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the
Holy Ghost;”
Salvation
▰ It doesn’t matter what god you believe in as long as you are sincere.
▻ (John 14:6) “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
▰ God is love and He will not send anyone to hell.
▻ (2 Thessalonians 1:8) “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Salvation’s Requirement
▰ Conviction of Sin
▻ Until a person is convicted of his sin, he cannot repent and be converted. He cannot believe and be saved.
▻ (Jeremiah 17:9) “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
▻ (Ecclesiastes 7:20) “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”
▻ The Apostle Paul said, (1Timothy 1:15) “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom
I am chief.”
Salvation’s Requirement
▰ Repentance
▻ (Acts 3:19) “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…”
▻ Repentance is a change of mind and heart. It is turning from our false hopes regarding salvation. It is admitting we are not good, but sinful and heading for
hell. It is agreeing with God that our good works and religious deeds will not save us. Until a person agrees with God that he is a wretched lost sinner, he
cannot be saved.
▻ Jesus said, “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)
Salvation’s Requirement
▰ Conversion
▻ Conversion is turning to God for salvation by trusting Christ’s atonement alone. It is believing that Christ died in our place to pay the judgment of our sin. It is
trusting Christ’s payment alone to save us from the Lake of Fire. (John 3:36) “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the
Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” It is calling on the Lord to be saved. (Rom 10:13) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the
Lord shall be saved.”
▻ A person cannot hold a false hope and true faith in Christ alone at the same time.
Salvation’s Requirement in Summary
▰ Believing on the Lord for salvation is not just a head belief, but also a heart belief.
▰ It is placing ones complete faith in Jesus, who died and rose again to pay for man’s sin and to provide eternal life.
▰ Saving faith in Christ must be repentant faith.
▰ Believing on Christ includes conviction, repentance and conversion.
