Rejoice Not, O Israel, Hosea 9:1-6
• Hosea 9:1-6, God will remove joy from Israel because of spiritual infidelity to Him. They praised idols for
their full cornfloor.
• No joy in harvest, v.2 (threshing floor, winepress, freshly pressed juice)
• No joy in freedom, v.3 (leave the Lord’s land as captives)
• No joy in the Temple, v.4 (no longer able to offer offerings to the Lord)
• No joy of feast days, v.5-6 (no more feast days)
• We must learn from Israel that true joy only exists when we are walking in harmony with our God. The grass
is never greener on the other side of the fence as the devil portrays. He lied to Eve in the Garden and he is
still lying today.
Payday has come, Hosea 9:7-9
• Hosea 9:7-9, It is the day of visitation when God visits recompence on their sin. Why?
• The [false] prophet is a fool (v.7).
• The [false] spiritual man is mad.
• The [faithful] watchman of Ephraim WAS with God (v.8). Men like Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, and Micah had been faithful
watchmen proclaiming true warnings, but no longer.
• BUT the [false] prophet and his lies are traps. These are hated by God (v.8).
• They corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah (v.9).
• Judges 19 records the immoral men who raped and killed the traveller’s concubine. He then cut her up and sent her to all Israel, calling for
judgment. Israel wiped out most of the men of Benjamin for their sin, but they themselves were not much better.
Israel has changed greatly, Hosea 9:10-14
• Hosea 9:10-12, Israel had been like grapes in the wilderness and like the firstripe figs. Both of these are
refreshing and sources of joy.
• NOW Israel worshipped Baalpeor and devoted themselves to that shameful worship.
• Their glory will fly away like a bird (v.11).
• Their children will be born dead (v.11)
• If they do have living children, they will soon die (v.12)
• WOE also to them for God will depart (v.12).
• Hosea 9:13-14, They had been a prosperous, pleasant place.
• NOW their children will be murdered (v.13).
• Their children will die before birth (v.14).
Judgment is inescapable, Hosea 9:15-17
• Hosea 9:15-17, Gilgal was a place of many former blessings. Now it was a place of idol worship.
• God sternly rebukes them. He hates their actions. He will drive them out of His house (v.15).
• Their princes (leaders, rulers, captains) are revolters (rebels).
• God will smite Ephraim and they will not multiply (v.16)
• God will cast them away because they will not listen (v.17).
• They will wander among the nations.
Note similes and metaphors in this chapter
• As other people (v.1) – other nations
• As the bread of mourners (v.4) – tasteless
• As in the days of Gibeah (v.9) – immoral and wicked
• Like grapes in the wilderness (v.10) – refreshing
• As the firstripe grapes (v.10) – refreshing
• Fly away like a bird (v.11) – departs quickly
• Spiritual watchman (v.8) – one who stands guard
• Root is dried up (v.16) – as dead
Applications for Us Today
• If we have sinned against the Lord or are not as close to Him as we once were, our rejoicing will be shortlived.
Instead, we ought to repent and mourn.
• Going through the motions of spiritual life without a closeness to God will never satisfy, and it does not
please the Lord.
• We must know that because God loves us, He will not overlook our sin. If we do not repent, we must
expect severe chastening.
