The secular movie NOAH has just recently come out in the movie theatres. It is important for us to use godly discernment about such movies. Answers In Genesis website has a detailed description of the movie. Here is one paragraph from the Answers In Genesis article.
Misrepresenting Mankind’s Sin: The filmmakers do show the sinfulness of mankind, though in the film mankind’s wickedness has more to do with how humans were destroying the environment and animals, rather than with their sin of rejecting God and mistreating their fellow man. The way the filmmakers choose to portray man’s sin distorts the Bible’s teachings, Noah’s character (he is portrayed in the film as a psychopath), and most importantly, the character of God. The movie is filled with mystical, pagan elements (e.g., Methuselah is a type of witchdoctor), blasphemy, and many disturbing scenes. Because of these things, we cannot recommend this pagan movie at all—much less for children to see.
Here are 7 reasons you should not go to the theatre to see the Noah movie.
- The evils Answers In Genesis points out are spiritually harmful.
- It was produced by the godless Hollywood movie industry.
- The director is an atheist and was not promoting Bible Christianity.
- Viewing an unbiblical account of the flood will twist your thinking.
- Supporting the theatre is supporting the x-rated movie industry.
- Attending the theatre is bad for your Christian testimony.
- Your money would be better spent on a DVD from Answers In Genesis.
This morning we begin a study of Noah’s Flood. Genesis 4 and 5 laid a foundation for the flood, but today we are going to look at the Reasons for Noah’s Flood as found in the Bible.
Transition
As we examine God’s reasons for sending the flood, we will see many parallels to our world today that ought to urge each of us to prepare for coming judgment.
Intermarriage, 6:1-3
- The sons of God married the daughters of men
- For centuries Christians have argued whether the “sons of God” were angels or godly men.
- I believe they were godly men for these reasons:
- God stove with “man” not “angels” in v.3.
- The Hebrew word “giant” does not necessarily mean an oversized man. It may mean a bully, hero or fierce warrior. Strongs, TWOT
- Angels in the Bible have no gender.
- Jesus said angels do not marry (Mt 22:30).
- I believe that this view, though not flawless, has fewer problems than the “angel” view.
- I believe they were godly men for these reasons:
- Sons of the godly line of Seth (Gen 5) began to marry ungodly women, probably from Cain’s line (Gen 4).
- They chose wives was based on beauty not godly character, v.2. This is a BIG mistake.
- Young men began to choose their own wives instead of allowing their parents help them and seeking God’s guidance, v.2.
- Marrying an ungodly person today is just as destructive as it was in those days. Beware!Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
- For centuries Christians have argued whether the “sons of God” were angels or godly men.
- Intermarriage upset God’s Spirit, v.3
- God was displeased when godly people married the ungodly and the evil results that it brought.
- The Holy Spirit would not always strive with man or plead with them to do right. In just 120 years he would send judgment.
Rebellion, 6:4
- Men became giants
- God does not judge oversized people. Their evil must have been oversized. They did not want to live God’s way.
- As noted, giants were not necessarily oversized men. They may have been bullies or fierce warriors. Either way, they were spiritual rebels. All rebellion begins in the heart.
- Men became mighty and renown
- When the sons of God married evil women, their children became giants of evil – fierce rebels.
- They were “mighty” (strong and brave) and men of “renown” (fame). They were heroes but unholy.
- God was not upset with their size nor their might but with the rebellion that accompanied it. God hates rebellion.1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Wickedness, 6:5-10
- God saw man’s wickedness and evil thoughts, v.5
- God sees the evil things that men do. He also sees the extent of the evil. Here he says that man’s wickedness was great or abundant.
- God sees all that we do and knows all that we think.Psalm 139:1-4 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.Proverbs 5:21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.
- Wickedness grieves the heart of God, v.6-7
- When we do wrong, it grieves God.
- When we think evil thoughts, it grieves God.
- Because God is holy, He must punish evil, v.7.
- Noah was a light in the growing darkness, v.8
- Noah was godly and received God’s grace (favour).
- Noah was a just (righteous) and perfect (spiritually solid) man in his generations, v.9.
- Noah also walked with God like his great grandfather Enoch, v.9. Noah dared to be different. He spent much time with God and had a close relationship with Him.
- Noah had three sons who also were god-fearing, v.10. He passed on his faith to his sons. Will you pay the price to walk with God?
Corruption, 6:11-13
- The earth and all flesh was corrupt
- The word corrupt means destroyed, ruined, or spoiled.
- The word violence means wrong, cruelty, or injustice.
- The earth was corrupted by of violence, v.11. It was literally filled with this violence and injustice.
- It was corrupted by man’s way or evil lifestyle, v.12.
- God was compelled to destroy the earth
- There will always be payday someday. God cannot overlook sin endlessly. You may get by with sin for a time, but mark it down, payday is coming. Moses’ words to Israel in Numbers 32:23 are still true today. “… be sure your sin will find you out.”
- Man destroyed the earth with his global wickedness and now God would destroy the earth and man by a global flood. The same Hebrew word that is translated corrupt (6:11-12) is translated destroy (6:13) and again in (6:17).
Conclusion
God gave us four reasons that he sent Noah’s Flood. They were intermarriage, rebellion, wickedness, and corruption. Young people, it is wrong to marry a person who is not godly. It displeases God and it will ruin your life. Living a rebellious life will also ruin your life and the lives of others around you just like it did in Noah’s day. Trying to hide wickedness and filthy thoughts from God is impossible. You may hide them from your parents, or spouse, or pastor, but God sees them clearly. Those who corrupt or ruin their lives in these ways will eventually meet corruption and destruction. These sins will not send a true Christian to hell, but he will feel the severe chastening hand of God.
We must learn from this to follow God’s marriage instructions, to repent of any rebellion, and to turn from wicked activities and evil thoughts so we do not ruin our lives.
If you have never been saved, that is where you must begin.
