Introduction: Here, I have a small tin of my favourite Lip Balm. It is an all-natural product that sooths and heals cracked or dry lips. I don’t use it very often, but when I do, it does an excellent job of healing my sore lips.
Did you know that the book of Proverbs speaks of a Lip Balm that I will call Solomon’s Lip Balm as well. Solomon’s Lip Balm does not heal cracked and bleeding lips, but it does heal more serious lip problems. The lips that Solomon’s Lip Balm can help are lips that say things that get you into trouble. More often than I care to admit, I need to use Solomon’s Lip Balm.
Transition: My goal this evening is to sell you on the need to regularly use of Solomon’s Lip Balm.
1. Solomon’s Lip Balm Helps the Following Lip Sores.
a. Lying
1) I think we all know what it means to lie. It is telling an untruth. It is also a lie when you only tell part of the truth.
2) (Proverbs 10:18) “He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.” When your lips lie, God says you are a fool.
3) (Proverbs 12:22) “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.” When your lips lie, they are disgusting and offensive to God.
4) (Proverbs 17:7) “Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.“
b. Flattering
1) (Proverbs 7:21) “With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.“
2) Flattering is saying smooth or enticing words. Such words are often exaggerated or untrue.
c. Perverse
1) (Proverbs 4:24) “Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.“
2) (Proverbs 19:1) “Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.“
3) Your lips are perverse when they say things that are twisted or deceitful.
d. Transgressing
1) (Proverbs 12:13) “The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.“
2) This word “transgression” speaks of rebellion against God or authorities. If you speak rebellious words, you will get caught in their trap.
e. Burning
1) (Proverbs 16:27) “An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.“
2) (Proverbs 26:23) “Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.“
3) If you have burning lips, they set things on fire. They are hot with passion, often anger. God says that those with burning lips are ungodly and have wicked hearts.
f. False
1) (Proverbs 17:4) “A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.“
2) These false lips are empty and vain. They say nothing that is worthwhile.
g. Foolish
1) (Proverbs 18:6) “A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.“
2) This fool’s lips stir up strife and contention, and love to argue.
h. Wide Open
1) (Proverbs 13:3) “He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.“
2) If you cannot keep your lips shut and quiet, they are wide open and too talkative. They will get you into trouble.
i. Prating
1) (Proverbs 10:8) “The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.“
2) (Proverbs 10:10) “He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.“
3) Prating is the same word as lip. When describing a fool, it may refer to talking too much.
2. The Following are Ingredients in Solomon’s Lib Balm
a. Truth
1) (Proverbs 12:19) “The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.“
2) Telling the truth is always right. This will fix lying lips, flattering lips, perverse lips and many others.
b. Righteousness
1) (Proverbs 10:21) “The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.“
2) (Proverbs 10:32) “The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.“
3) To have righteous lips, you must strive to be righteous (i.e., right with God). Speak right words.
c. Wisdom
1) (Proverbs 14:3) “In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.“
2) (Proverbs 15:7) “The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.“
3) Where can we get wisdom? From God (Pr 2:6). Wise lips say things that preserve. They also share helpful knowledge.
d. Sweetness
1) (Proverbs 16:21) “The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.“
2) Do you have sweet lips? God says that sweet lips increase learning. They teach good things. They do not speak bitter words.
e. Training
1) (Proverbs 16:23) “The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.“
2) If you have God’s wisdom, you need to train your lips to teach and give insight rather than to hurt others.
3) The Apostle James warned, (James 3:8) “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” You can’t tame your tongue, but you can train it.
f. Refraining
1) (Proverbs 10:19) “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.“
2) To refrain your lips is to restrain or hold them back. Many times, people stir us up by their unkind words and we are tempted to speak foolishly. God wants us to have refrained lips. This is similar to the next ingredient.
g. Shutting
1) (Proverbs 17:28) “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.“
2) This bit of balm is simple to understand but difficult to do. God says that when you shut your lips you have understanding. Shutting your lips will keep you from a lot of trouble.
Conclusion: Well, how are your lips? If they are chapped and bleeding because of any of the ailments Solomon described, you need to start using Solomon’s Lip Balm. Put on a thick layer of truth, right words, wisdom, sweetness, training, refraining, and shutting. If you do this daily with sincere prayer for God’s help, your chapped lips will begin healing very soon.
